Are you passionate about creating meaningful experiences for children and families through play-based learning? The Children’s Museum of the Upstate (TCMU) is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and mission-driven individual to join our team as a Play and Learning Guide. This role is at the heart of our museum experience—engaging guests of all ages through intentional, inclusive, and hands-on programming that sparks curiosity, inspires imagination, and encourages joyful discovery.

🌟 About the Role:

  • As a Play and Learning Guide, you’ll:
  • Facilitate engaging play and learning experiences through scheduled, pop-up, and fee-based programs such as Kid’s Day Out, Parent’s Night Out, and seasonal camps.
  • Prepare and organize materials and resources to support interactive programming.
  • Create a welcoming environment by communicating effectively with children, caregivers, educators, and visitors from all backgrounds.
  • Support daily museum operations, including exhibit upkeep, crowd flow, and visitor assistance.
  • Collaborate with team members and leadership to ensure high-quality programming aligned with best practices in informal education and child development.

This position is ideal for individuals who are energized by dynamic environments, love working with children and families, and believe in the power of play as a tool for learning and connection.

🧩 Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, interactive environment with children and families

Preferred:

  • 1–3 years’ experience in informal education, programming, museums, or related fields
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
  • Familiarity with current trends in education, child development, and museum pedagogy

🔧 Physical & Work Environment:

  • This position requires regular movement throughout the museum’s four floors (elevator access provided) and may involve working both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, stand for extended periods, and engage with visitors in a busy, high-energy environment is essential.
  • Occasional travel (up to 5%) may be required, including visits to our Spartanburg location or off-site programming needs.

Guest Services Associate

Guest Services Associate
Part-time, Non-Exempt
Greenville Museum location
Weekday availability required
$10-12/hr

The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is seeking a Guest Services Associate to assist in supporting the mission to ignite a community of compassionate problem solvers through intentional and inclusive play. Serving over 250,000 visitors a year, TCMU has locations in Greenville and Spartanburg, houses hands-on exhibits supporting learning through play, and provides robust programming and outreach opportunities to the Upstate SC community.

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Handle daily admissions, ticketing and in-house membership purchases
  • Provide inviting, upbeat welcome and experience to incoming guests and groups
  • Cover retail store register and accurate, well-completed sales
  • Support Guest Services team with inventory upkeep and physical organizational layout

 

Predominant Tasks

  • Work daily Admissions operations and retail store using various computer systems, answering phones and inquires while creating a positive, memorable experience for guests
  • Act as ambassadors for the museum, providing guests with required assistance and escalating concerns to manage customer expectations
  • Assist museum staff with retail store: 1. Sales 2. Inventory put away 3. Accurate inventory counts, upkeep, and placement 4. Sales reporting to provide analytics, increase sales, and support the visitor experience
  • Assist the Guest Services and Marketing teams as needed

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year of experience in customer services or related field involving such interactions
  • Flexible Schedule, including evening and weekend hours
  • Strong organizational and technological skills

 

Experience

  • High school diploma. Additional educational or empirical experiences helpful
  • Adept at problem solving and versed in using emotional intelligence interacting with colleagues, children and the general public 

 

Technical Skills

  • Project managements, Office 365, Basic math skills

 

Personal Attributes

  • Great interpersonal skills dealing with internal teams, children, families and community members
  • Team player, high energy and ethical, able to flourish in a fast paced environment with confidence
  • Ability to multi-task, think critically, and drive process and operational improvements
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal
  • Strong organization skills and eye for process flow

Intern

The TCMU Internship Program seeks to recruit, train, and retain committed interns who bring a variety of knowledge, life experiences, and skills to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate in order to better meet the needs of the visitors TCMU serves. Internship opportunities exist throughout the organization, from exhibit maintenance to event planning to host a wide variety of individuals.

Internship seasons run from August-December/January-May/May-August unless otherwise agreed upon by TCMU on a case-by-case basis. Openings for internships vary by season. Internships are not paid opportunities. Benefits include:
