The Volunteer Fellow at The Children’s Museum of the Upstate (TCMU) will play a key role in recruiting, training, and managing the TCMU Volunteers, a team of dedicated people who support museum programs and visitor engagement. This unpaid, volunteer-based role is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit management, leadership, and volunteer coordination. This role will have access to professional development opportunities, mentorship from museum staff, and a behind-the-scenes look at museum operations.
This role requires a commitment of about 15-30 hours per month. Although the position is unpaid, you will gain valuable experience, networking opportunities, and a letter of recommendation from the CEO of TCMU upon successful completion. TCMU also offers complimentary membership for the duration of your time with us.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the main point of contact for all TCMU volunteers, ensuring a well-supported and engaged volunteer team.
- Recruit, interview, and onboard new volunteers, ensuring alignment with museum needs and expectations.
- Work alongside TCMU Staff to design and facilitate training sessions to prepare volunteers for guest interactions, museum programs, and special events.
- Oversee scheduling and shift coordination to ensure proper volunteer coverage across museum activities.
- Track volunteer attendance, performance, and feedback, making necessary adjustments to improve engagement alongside the community engagement team.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, including networking with museum professionals, attending training workshops, and gaining exposure to nonprofit management.
Qualifications:
- Must be 21+ and interested in nonprofit work, leadership development, or youth engagement.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
- Experience in volunteer coordination, event planning, or leadership roles is a plus but not required.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, interactive environment with children, families, and volunteers.
- A proactive, adaptable, and team-oriented mindset.

Outreach Associate
Part-time, Non-Exempt
Greenville Museum location
Flexible Schedule, including evening and weekend hours
$12/hour
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is seeking an Outreach Associate to assist in supporting the mission to ignite a community of compassionate problem solvers through intentional and inclusive play. Serving over 250,000 visitors a year, TCMU has locations in Greenville and Spartanburg, houses hands-on exhibits supporting learning through play, and provides robust programming and outreach opportunities to the Upstate SC community.
Major Responsibilities
- Support the planning, preparation and facilitation of engaging outreach programs at schools, libraries, and community events that reflect the museum’s educational focus.
- Represent the museum at community events by fostering partnerships, promoting events/programs and other general museum information.
- Work collaboratively with museum staff to deliver innovative solutions that result in extraordinary cross-functional team facilitation.
- Provide excellent customer service while interacting with students, educators, caregivers, and community partners and ensure that concerns are addressed or escalated to management
- Assist with other TCMU supplemental programs as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Flexible Schedule, including evening and weekend hours
Experience
- 0-3 years’ experience in educational programing, customer service or related field
- Adept at problem solving and versed in using emotional intelligence interacting with colleagues, children and the general public
Technical Skills
- Professional, engaging communication skills both verbal and written; natural ability in greeting others to feel welcomed (multiple levels/age groups)
- Strong organizational skills, planning and time management
- Proficient with Office 365 computer applications

Exhibits Associate
Part-time, Non-Exempt
Greenville Museum location
Weekend availability required
$12/hr
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is seeking a Exhibits Associate to assist in supporting the mission to ignite a community of compassionate problem solvers through intentional and inclusive play. Serving over 250,000 visitors a year, TCMU has locations in Greenville and Spartanburg, houses hands-on exhibits supporting learning through play, and provides robust programming and outreach opportunities to the Upstate SC community.
Major Responsibilities
- Routinely round the museum floor, being perceptive of all surroundings affecting safe, fully functional exhibits
- Attend to daily requirements identified to keep exhibits in good operating condition
- Proactively support special events, facility needs, and other needs of the Facilities and Exhibits department as assigned
Predominant Tasks
- Reset exhibit props to ensure exhibits are able to function as intended for the visitors
- Identify potential safety concerns or issues requiring further maintenance and escalate to appropriate parties
- Proactively communicate exhibit updates, failures, or repairs affecting the visitor experience to the appropriate departments such as Guest Services, Programming, and Volunteers
- Assist in exhibit/facility repair
- Document problems or opportunities within exhibit spaces
Qualifications
- Self-motivated, able to take instruction and complete tasks independently
- Have a good attitude and greet guests enthusiastically
- Able to multi-task and respond to concerns or new issues quickly
- Must have weekend availability
Experience
- 0-1 year experience in a facilities, exhibits, or hospitality field helpful, but not required
Technical Skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills, able to articulate needs and requests of management
- Administratively organized and able to keep up with tasks lists and requirements

Guest Services Associate
Part-time, Non-Exempt

The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is seeking a Guest Services Associate to assist in supporting the mission to ignite a community of compassionate problem solvers through intentional and inclusive play. Serving over 250,000 visitors a year, TCMU has locations in Greenville and Spartanburg, houses hands-on exhibits supporting learning through play, and provides robust programming and outreach opportunities to the Upstate SC community.
Major Responsibilities
- Handle daily admissions, ticketing and in-house membership purchases
- Provide inviting, upbeat welcome and experience to incoming guests and groups
- Cover retail store register and accurate, well-completed sales
- Support Guest Services team with inventory upkeep and physical organizational layout
Predominant Tasks
- Work daily Admissions operations and retail store using various computer systems, answering phones and inquires while creating a positive, memorable experience for guests
- Act as ambassadors for the museum, providing guests with required assistance and escalating concerns to manage customer expectations
- Assist museum staff with retail store: 1. Sales 2. Inventory put away 3. Accurate inventory counts, upkeep, and placement 4. Sales reporting to provide analytics, increase sales, and support the visitor experience
- Assist the Guest Services and Marketing teams as needed
Qualifications
- Minimum one year of experience in customer services or related field involving such interactions
- Flexible Schedule, including evening and weekend hours
- Strong organizational and technological skills
Experience
- High school diploma. Additional educational or empirical experiences helpful
- Adept at problem solving and versed in using emotional intelligence interacting with colleagues, children and the general public

The TCMU Internship Program seeks to recruit, train, and retain committed interns who bring a variety of knowledge, life experiences, and skills to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate in order to better meet the needs of the visitors TCMU serves. Internship opportunities exist throughout the organization, from exhibit maintenance to event planning to host a wide variety of individuals.
